FÜHRER AND SEDUCER
dir. Joachim A. Lang, Germany, Slovakia, 2024, 135 min
Hitler's insane ideas needed executors - men devoted to the Führer, yet simultaneously consumed by ambition and a lust for power. One of the most loyal was Joseph Goebbels, presented by Joachim A. Lang as the dark genius of Third Reich propaganda and the "seducer" of an entire nation. At the same time, he is a man disturbingly similar to the cynical spin doctors of contemporary politics. He is dynamic, hardworking, and devilishly inventive. He directs the press editors, eminent personalities of culture and especially cinema, which was the "new media" of the time. He instantly grasps Hitler's ideas and smoothly executes successive propaganda shifts. The only constant motive in his work remains hatred of Jews - from early boycott campaigns to the rationalization of their "necessary" extermination. The film, straddling the line between documentary and biographical drama, portrays the 12-year history of the "Thousand-Year Reich" through the prism of Goebbels's career and his scandal-ridden marriage to Magda, herself a fanatical Hitler’s follower. This tumultuous relationship ended with their joint suicide in the Reich Chancellery bunker after administering poison to their six children. At the time, Joseph Goebbels was the official successor to Hitler, who had died just hours earlier.
