JEWS BY CHOICE

dir. Justyna Gawełko, Tomer Slutzky, Poland, Israel, USA, 2024, 77’ min

WARSAW PREMIERE. In a picturesque Czech town, an alliance of ordinary citizens become inspired to renovate their local synagogue, convert to Judaism, and give birth to the first Jewish community in the region since the Holocaust. The small Czech city of Karniów near the Polish border was for centuries home to a thriving Jewish community. After the war and the Holocaust, all that remained there was an impressive 19th-century synagogue, which was ruined by a flood in 1997. And it was the idea to restore it to its former glory that led a group of enthusiasts to become increasingly interested in Jewish religion and culture. Over time, the hobby became a lifelong mission and the idea of converting to Judaism emerged. The filmmakers followed for years the adventures of people who decided “to become Jews” and against all odds consistently pursued their goal. Full of absurd Czech humor, the documentary keeps the viewer guessing about the true intentions and motivations of the protagonists.
