PASSENGER
dir. Andrzej Munk, Witold Lesiewicz, Poland, 1963, 58 min
A groundbreaking work by Andrzej Munk, based on the Auschwitz-set prose of Zofia Posmysz. The action unfolds on two timelines: the contemporary setting of the 1960s, where former overseer Liza spots her prisoner, Marta, during a transatlantic cruise; and extensive flashbacks from the camp. The two young women were engaged in a psychological game where Liza, holding the power of life and death, "educated" Marta, unsuccessfully trying to break her. The former SS guard, despite confiding in her husband, whitewashes her role in Auschwitz. The film presents both versions of her camp biography and her relationship with Marta. Against the backdrop of this confrontation, the viewer observes scenes from Auschwitz that were shocking by the standards of cinematography at the time - naked female prisoners at a night roll call, or the final walk to the gas chamber. Work on Passenger was interrupted by Andrzej Munk's fatal car accident. The film, though incomplete and enigmatic, was critically acclaimed, winning an award at Cannes.
