POLAND VS HISTORY
dir. Joanna Grudzińska, France, Poland, 2025, 70 min
The 1941 pogrom in the small town of Jedwabne was a blank spot in post-war Polish history for a long time. It was not until the book Neighbors by Jan Tomasz Gross, published almost 60 years later, that a public debate was ignited surrounding Polish-Jewish relations during the occupation. The film shows how this subject has divided contemporary Poles and been co-opted by historical politics. We return to the facts that many have tried to deny. We observe the painstaking and painful process of Polish society grappling with its own history and with the awareness that this history was often far from heroic and that Poles were not exclusively its victims.
Screening as part of the celebration of the 25th anniversary of the publication of "Neighbors" by Jan Tomasz Gross. The screening will be followed by a meeting with the director, Joanna Grudzińska, and Jan Tomasz Gross.
