THE AUSCHWITZ REPORT
dir. Peter Bebjak, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Poland, Germany, 2021, 94 min
Two Slovak Jews, Rudolf Vrba and Alfréd Wetzler, are transported to Auschwitz-Birkenau. While struggling to survive the inferno, they meticulously gather evidence of the atrocities: camp blueprints, lists of those sentenced to death, and labels from the deadly Zyklon B. After nearly two years and a dramatic escape, they compile a report intended to show the world how the German mass murder machine truly operates. They provide a detailed description of the death factory, where prisoners endure inhumane torture and their lives are stripped of all value. The truth they reveal is so horrific that not everyone is ready to believe it, while Nazi propaganda continues to work incessantly. Based on true events, the film was Slovakia's official submission for the Academy Awards.
