THE MIRACLE MAN

dir. Michał Waszyński, Poland, 1937, 105 min

88 years after its premiere, the celebrated pre-war film The Miracle Man returns to the big screen, thanks to the cooperation between the WJFF and FINA.

Produced in 1937, The Miracle Man was largely the result of work by creators of Jewish descent, including director Michał Waszyński, screenwriter Anatol Stern, composer Henryk Wars, and set designer Jacek Rotmil. The film was produced by the Feniks studio, owned by Fajga and Leon Fenigstein, who were also behind another of Waszyński’s famous films—the Yiddish-language The Dybbuk.
The first screen adaptation of Tadeusz Dołęga-Mostowicz’s novel launched a phenomenon that became a permanent fixture in Polish popular culture—the story of the brilliant but amnesiac surgeon Wilczur has since seen two more acclaimed adaptations.
For this re-premiere, we will screen a nearly complete version of The Miracle Man, previously unknown in such a full form. The image and sound have been digitally restored in FINA's laboratories, restoring the brilliance of one of the most important titles in pre-war Polish cinema.
