THE PASSENGER ANDRZEJ MUNK
dir. Michał Bielawski, Poland, 2025, 83 min
A vibrant portrait of the precursor of the Polish Film School and, simultaneously, the tragic story of a man whose life was marked by war and Stalinism. During the German occupation, Andrzej Munk hid under an assumed name and participated in the Warsaw Uprising. Later, as a convinced socialist, he joined in the post-war reconstruction effort. The talent he revealed at the Łódź Film School compelled him to challenge the rules of Socialist Realism in Man on the Track. In his subsequent films, Eroica and Bad Luck, he confronted Polish heroic myths, employing grotesque and tragic farce. His death in a car accident at the age of 41 interrupted work on The Passenger, a deeply moving film that might have been Munk's ticket to a world career. In the memories of his friends, he appears as a man full of contradictions - secretive, watchful, and distanced, yet simultaneously craving carefree fun and full of wild ideas. This biographical account of Andrzej Munk’s life is built upon historical newsreels, interviews with the man himself and his friends, and excerpts from personal correspondence. A record of the unfulfilled, tragically interrupted life of a great director on the cusp of a world career.
