THE VANISHING SOLDIER
dir. Dani Rosenberg, Israel, 2023, 98 min

POLISH PREMIERE. 18-year-old Shlomi is fighting with his unit in Gaza. When the commander shouts out orders to march after a night in a ruined house, Shlomi simply doesn't move and is left alone after a moment of confusion. Did he chicken out? Has he deserted? He himself doesn't seem to know how it happened, and now - driven by another impulse - he sneaks back to Tel Aviv, where life in the cosmopolitan metropolis goes on as if nothing ever happened. Shlomi has a lot of personal business to attend to. Over the next few hours, in a hectic rush he will meet the family members and try hard to convince his girlfriend not to leave the country. The war he has escaped from remains present in the background as anti-aircraft alarms and increasingly ominous news on the radio. At the same time, the army announces that the 18-year-old must have been ambushed by Hamas, and all of Israel keeps its fingers crossed for the heroic soldier's rescue.
