OPENING GALA 2025 DEDICATED TO THE MEMORY OF MARIAN TURSKI

NOVEMBER 3rd, The POLIN MUSEUM, 19:00

Opening Gala of the 23rd edition of David's Camera Film Festival will be dedicated to the memory of Marian Turski, a truly exceptional figure in our community. Turski was not only a leader in Polish Jewish life but also an undisputed moral authority.

The Warsaw Jewish Film Festival, POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews, and the Association of the Jewish Historical Institute are honored to invite you to an event commemorating Marian Turski. The official ceremony will be followed by a screening of the film "My Happiest Day" directed by Michał Bukojemski.

“MY HAPPIEST DAY. MARIAN TURSKI” dir. M. Bukojemski, Poland, 2013, 67'

"My Happiest Day" is an evocative title drawn from Marian Turski's own life experiences. It does not refer to the birth of his daughter, his wedding, or an intimate memory from peacetime, but to the time of the Holocaust. It recounts the day when the young Turski, enduring terrible physical pain, humiliation, and suffering, understood that he had successfully passed a selection and would live.

As it turned out, a long, fascinating, and eventful life awaited him. But at that moment, only the present mattered - the fact that immediate death was not his fate. This deeply moving testimony was recorded by Michał Bukojemski. We wish to recall and relive it again in the company of Marian Turski’s friends and supportive audience.

Marian Turski was the Guest of Honor at our Closing Gala on November 10, 2024, during which the world premiere of Yoav Potash's film "Among the Neighbors" took place. This film received the Special Award of the David's Camera Foundation, funded by Polish Television (TVP). We wish that one year after that significant event, Turski's voice will once again fill the auditorium of the POLIN Museum, serving as a symbolic farewell to the festival community.

Following the film screening, a discussion will be held featuring:

  • Jerzy Baczyński, Editor-in-Chief of Tygodnik Polityka
  • Zygmunt Stępiński, Director of the POLIN Museum
  • Joanna Turska, Daughter of Marian Turski
  • Moderator: Joanna Fikus, Vice-Chairwoman of the Board of the Association of the Jewish Historical Institute
